We Must Not Be In the Dark About the Capability of Human Behavior

 

I. Don’t Be Confused By Bad People Acting Good – It is Possible

“bad people”? – Luke 6:32-34

 

1. Saul here is a bad man going a good thing - Vss 16-21-

 

2. Bad People Are Capable of Acting good –

Romans 2:17 Mat 7:21 Vs 17  & 26:1 –

Many are capable of very good behavior all their life but…

WCF 16:7 –

 

II. Don’t Be Discouraged By Good People Acting Badly – (Doing Bad Things)

 

1. David’s men are good men doing a bad thing – Vs 4-10 22:2 vs 10

 

2. Good people are capable of acting badly

Scripture examples – Noah, Abraham, Lot, David, Jonah, Peter

Scripture warnings – 1 John 1:8-9,

 

3. We are sinners saved by grace, we are still sinners and tend toward two evils

 

a. We misread the promises of God

Vs 4 & 23:17 – Promise to deliver David = warrant to kill King Saul

Abraham and Hagar – promis as warrant to do what it takes

 

b. We misread the providence of God

Vs 4 & 2-8 - Since it is my power it is ok to do it

We read providential testing as “feeling led” or Open door

 

III. Be Instructed By Good People Acting Good

 

1. David is a good person doing a good thing – Vs 5

David is a man after God’s heart, seeking to glorify God, not trusting in…

 

2. Learn from David’s example of a good man capable of great bad as he….

 

a. You only grow in godliness if you maintain a good conscience before God

vs 5 – David has a tender conscience guided by God’s Word

Resolve there is no such thing as a “little” sin Know what sin is

1 Timothy 1:3-5

1 Timothy 4:1-5

 

b. You will only grow in godliness if you stop asking “How close….
