LIVING HOPE OPC ORDER OF WORSHIP for Sunday, May 30, 2021 at 10:45 AM

Prelude

Opening Song – Lord, I Lift Your Name on High

Announcements

Gospel Greeting – Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

Call to Worship Song – I Extol You

Call to Worship – Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker! For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. Psalm 95:6-7

Prayer of Adoration & Invocation

Hymn of Praise – NTH 358 – For All the Saints

Reading of the Law – Deuteronomy 5:1-21

Corporate Confession of Sin – Almighty God, we confess we have broken your commandments. We have sinned by selfishness, worldliness, unbelief and pride. We have not loved our neighbor as ourselves, and we have not walked humbly with you. Forgive us our sins and blot out our debts according to your tender mercies, according to your loving kindness. Cleanse us by the blood of Jesus your Son. Give us a humble and contrite heart that we might forgive others as you have forgiven us. We ask through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon – Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” … For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” – Rom. 10:9-11, 13

Doxology – NTH 731

Exhortation to Give – For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints, but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God. By their approval of this service, they will glorify God because of your submission flowing from your confession of the gospel of Christ, and the generosity of your contribution for them and for all others, while they long for you and pray for you, because of the surpassing grace of God upon you. Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift! 2 Cor. 9:12-15

Prayer for Collection & Pastoral Prayer

Medley

– Alas, and Did My Savior Bleed

– NTH 261 – What Wondrous Love Is This

Scripture Readings – OT: Isaiah 43:8-28 / NT: John 8:21-30

Prayer for Illumination

Sermon – An Exposition of John 8:21-30: “The Misconstrued Messiah”

Jesus’ claims are cynically and fatally misconstrued by those who disbelieve.

  1. Jesus’ departure is cynically and fatally misconstrued. (John 8:21-22)
  2. Jesus’ I AM identity and origin are blindly and fatally misconstrued. (John 8:23-27)
  3. Jesus’ “lifting up” on the Cross will also be misconstrued – but will save those who believe (John 8:28-30)

Prayer of Application

Hymn of Response – NTH 257 – Stricken, Smitten, and Afflicted

Benediction – May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. Romans 15:13
