Announcements

Gospel Greeting – Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. – 1 Timothy 1:2

Call to Worship Hymn – NTH 164 – O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing

Call to Worship – Sing praises to the LORD, O you his saints, and give thanks to his holy name. For his anger is but for a moment, and his favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning. Psalm 30:4-5

Prayer of Adoration & Invocation

Hymn of Praise – NTH 94 – How Firm a Foundation

Reading of the Law – Matthew 22:34-40

(Silent Confession of Sin)

Corporate Confession of Sin – Most holy and merciful Father, we acknowledge and confess before you our sinful nature – prone to evil and slothful in good – and all our shortcomings and offenses against you. You alone know how often we have sinned in wandering from your ways, in wasting your gifts, in forgetting your love. O Lord, have mercy on us, who are ashamed and sorry for all the ways we have displeased you. Teach us to hate our errors, cleanse us from our secret faults, and forgive our sins for the sake of your dear Son. And O most holy and loving Father, send your purifying grace into our hearts, we beseech you, and that we may henceforth live in your light and walk in your ways, according to the commandments of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon – There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. Rom. 8:1-4

Doxology – NTH 732

Exhortation to Give – So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith. Gal. 6:10

Sermon – An Exposition of John 8:31-38: “Set Free by the Son”

Jesus sets sinners free by the Truth.

  1. 1. True disciples abide in His Word and enjoy this freedom. (John 8:31-33)
  2. 2. But the self-righteous reject His Word and remain enslaved to sin. (John 8:34-35)
  3. 3. True sons are set free by the Son of God; false sons listen to their evil father. (John 8:36-38).

Prayer of Application

Hymn of Response – NTH 181 – We Come, O Christ, to You

Benediction – The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. Numbers 6:24-26
