Call to Worship – One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to inquire in his temple. - Psalm 27:4

Prayer of Adoration & Invocation

Opening Hymn – NTH 172 – Let Us Love and Sing and Wonder

Reading of Law – A Summary of the Ten Commandments & Great Commandment

Confession of Sin – Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; and we have done those things which we ought not to have done; and there is no health in us. But you, O Lord, have mercy upon us. And grant, O merciful Father, for Jesus’ sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous and joyful life, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

Declaration of Pardon – Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. - Isaiah 53:4-6

Doxology – NTH 731

Exhortation to Give – Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; bring an offering, and come into his courts! - Psalm 96:8

An Exposition of John 5:39-47: “God’s Word Witnesses to God’s Word Made Flesh”

All the Scriptures – and the Law of Moses – bear clear witness to Christ.

  1. The Scriptural witness revisited: the whole Word of God bears witness to God the Word. (John 5:39-40)
  2. The reason these witnesses are rejected: men glory in the flesh. (John 5:41-44)
  3. The final witness: Moses bears sure witness to Jesus. (John 5:45-47)

Prayer of Application

Communion Preparation Hymn – Behold the Lamb

Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper

(Bread: When I Survey the Wondrous Cross / Cup: NTH 254 – There Is a Fountain)
