LIVING HOPE OPC ORDER OF WORSHIP
for Sunday, September 27th, 2020 at 10:45 AM

Prelude – W&C 207 – God So Loved the World

Announcements

Gospel Greeting – Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Call to Worship Song – Light of the World

Call to Worship – Oh sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things! His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him. The LORD has made known his salvation; he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations. He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Ps. 98:1-3

Prayer of Adoration & Invocation

Opening Hymn – NTH 55 – To God Be the Glory

Reading of Law – Romans 3:9-20

Confession of Sin – Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Declaration of Pardon – The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. 1 Tim. 1:15

Confession of Faith (Heidelberg Catechism, Q&A 60)

Leader: Christian, how are you righteous before God?

Congregation: Only by true faith in Jesus Christ. Even though my conscience accuses me of having grievously sinned against all God’s commandments, of never having kept any of them, and of still being inclined to all evil, nevertheless, without any merit of my own, out of sheer grace, God grants and credits to me the perfect satisfaction, righteousness, and holiness of Christ, as if I had never sinned nor been a sinner, and as if I had been as perfectly obedient as Christ was obedient for me – if only I accept this gift with a believing heart.

Exhortation to Give – …Remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” Acts 20:35b

Doxology – NTH 732

Prayer for Collection & Pastoral Prayer

Scripture Readings – OT: Numbers 21:4-9 / NT: John 3:1-21

Medley – There Is a Redeemer

– How Deep the Father’s Love

Prayer for Illumination

Sermon – An Exposition of John 3:9-21: “God’s Son-Giving Love”

Jesus has descended from heaven to reveal how God loved the world:

1. He is the Son of Man who descended to be lifted up. (John 3:9-15)

2. He is the Son of God given by His Father to save believing sinners. (John 3:16-18)

3. He is the One who brings saving light – but men love darkness instead. (John 3:19-21)

Prayer of Application

Closing Song – NTH 6 – O Come, My Soul, Bless Thou the Lord (Psalm 103)

Benediction – The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. Numbers 6:24-26

ANNOUNCEMENTS – week of 9/27/2020

1. The new member’s class started this past Tuesday September 22nd at 7:00 PM.It is not too late to join in. Touch base with Pastor Phelps to discuss this.

2. As mentioned last week, we will be having a "restricted" Sunday Worship service once a month, on the first Sunday of the month (Communion Sunday). The service will begin at 8:30am. The first service will be on Sunday, October 4, 2020. This service will not be Live Streamed or recorded. We are using the term "restricted" to indicate that while we plan to include all the elements of worship, those in attendance will be required to practice physical distancing and wear a mask the entire time they are in the building, before, during and after the service. The Lord's Supper will be offered to those who are comfortable with participating. As we do in the 10:45am service, we will be taking every safety precaution to ensure that Communion is served in the most sanitary way possible. While all the details of this service are still being worked out, we want to make sure that those of you who are not able to attend our 10:45am service, for various reasons, know that we are moving forward with providing this alternative.

3. Music Team Meeting - October 4 at 12:30pm.  Anyone who is interested in serving on the music team is invited to attend.  We welcome singers and instrumentalist. A discussion of the ministry, philosophy and function of the team will be discussed.  This meeting is open to all, whether there is a desire to join the team or a desire to understand better the ministry of the music team at Living Hope.  Any questions, contact Beth Barshinger.

4. Operation Christmas Child - For Operation Christmas Child this year we will be packing our own shoe boxes individually. This is a great tradition to start with your family or to do with your grandchildren!  Directions on how to pack a shoe box are in the Operation Christmas Child brochure on the Operation Christmas Child table in the hallway. Please bring your packed shoe boxes back to the church by October 11.  Last year we set a goal of 150 shoe boxes and were able to submit 168 shoe boxes . Our goal for this year is also 150.  If you don’t have a shoe box, empty shoe boxes are under the Operation Christmas Child table that is in the hallway. Please leave your filled shoe boxes under the coat rack by October 11th.

5. Barb Mcadams needs help getting to church. Her request is for people to be strong enough to help steady her in case she loses her balance. She does not want to come to Sunday School. So we need as many volunteers as are willing. There is a sign up sheet on the bulletin board. Once people sign up, a schedule will be made up. As Skip says, “many hands make light work”.

6. There are multiple copies of Church Around the World, Focus on the Family and Glimpses of Christian History inserts available that can be picked up from long table in hallway.

7. As of today, All Sunday School programs have resumed. Please remember that the starting time is 9:45 AM.

8. The Wednesday evening Bible Study, Discussion and Prayer has resumed here at the church at 7:00pm. It will also be on Zoom and you will get a Zoom invitation by Wednesday afternoon.

9. Prayer requests and praises – please get them to Pastor Phelps ahead of the service either by email or handing him a written prayer request.

10. MEAL MINISTRY – Tami McKee would like you to let her me know if anyone would like to be added or removed from the list of those who receive requests for the Meal Ministry? Also, as a reminder, if anyone is aware of a need that should be addressed by the Meal Ministry, please contact Tami McKee -
