LIVING HOPE OPC ORDER OF WORSHIP for Sunday, August 21st, 2022 at 10:45 AM

Opening Song – Reformation Hymn

Gospel Greeting – Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. 1 Timothy 1:2

Call to Worship Song – The Risen Christ

Call to Worship – But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than that of Abel. Hebrews 12:22-24

Prayer of Adoration & Invocation

Hymn of Praise – NTH 524 – Thy Works, Not Mine, O Christ

Reading of the Law – Matthew 22:34-40

(Silent Confession of Sin)

Corporate Confession of Sin – Almighty God, we confess we have broken your commandments. We have sinned by selfishness, worldliness, unbelief and pride. We have not loved our neighbor as ourselves, and we have not walked humbly with you. Forgive us our sins and blot out our debts according to your tender mercies, according to your loving kindness. Cleanse us by the blood of Jesus your Son. Give us a humble and contrite heart that we might forgive others as you have forgiven us. We ask through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon – Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”—so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith. Gal. 3:13-14

Doxology – NTH 733

Exhortation to Give – “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” – Matthew 6:19-21

Prayer for Collection & Pastoral Prayer

– NTH 457 – Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing

– Before the Throne of God Above

Scripture Readings – OT: Isaiah 1:9-20 / NT: Galatians 4:1-11

Prayer for Illumination

Sermon – An Exposition of Galatians 4:8-11: “Freed from Superstitious Legalism”

Christ has freed us from superstitious legalism:

  1. 1. That freedom is all about who we know – or rather who knows us. (Galatians 4:8-9a)
  2. 2. That freedom is lost if we return to our superstitious ways. (Galatians 4:9b-10)
  3. 3. That freedom is the goal of faithful Gospel ministers. (Galatians 4:11)

Prayer of Application

Hymn of Response – NTH 461 – Not What My Hands Have Done

Benediction – The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. Numbers 6:24-26
