Prelude

Opening Song – Blessed Be Your Name in the Land that Is Plentiful

Announcements

Gospel Greeting – Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior. Titus 1:4

Call to Worship Song – Reformation Hymn

Call to Worship – Oh sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things! His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him. The LORD has made known his salvation; he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations. He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Psalm 98:1-3

Prayer of Adoration & Invocation

Hymn of Praise – NTH 59 – Forever Settled in the Heavens

Reading of the Law – Matthew 22:34-30

Corporate Confession of Sin – Have mercy on us, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out our transgressions. Wash us thoroughly from our iniquity and cleanse us from our sin. For we know our transgressions, and our sin is ever before us. Against you, you only, have we sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment. Purge us with hyssop, and we shall be clean; wash us and we shall be whiter than snow. For you have promised, O Father, that if we confess our sins, you will be faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness – by the blood of your Son, Jesus. Restore to us the joy of your salvation by the power of your Holy Spirit. And enable us, by your grace, to walk in the light of your Gospel, and to show fellow sinners the way of repentance. Amen. (Adapted from Psalm 51)

Assurance of Pardon – Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”—so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith. Gal. 3:13-14

Doxology – NTH 731

Exhortation to Give – But as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in our love for you—see that you excel in giving which is an act of grace also. 2 Cor. 8:7

Prayer for Illumination

Sermon – An Exposition of Psalm 1: “Christ the Blessed Man”

Before the face of God, there is a way of life and a way of destruction.

  1. The Blessed Man avoids the way of the wicked, and delights in God’s Word (Psalm 1:1-2).
  2. The Blessed Man is vibrant and fruitful, but the wicked are like chaff (Psalm 1:3-4).
  3. The Blessed Man is righteous and known by God, but the wicked will perish (Psalm 1:5-6).

Jesus Christ is the Blessed Man, the Word and Wisdom of God: by faith in Him, we are blessed and righteous before the face of God.

Prayer of Application

Psalm of ResponseTrinity Psalter Psalm 1 (tune: NTH 164)

Benediction – Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word. 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17
